Meet the Trainers of Gut Check Fitness, San Diego's #1 Boot Camp

Sarah Domurat

Born and raised in San Diego, Sarah grew up playing competitive field hockey and soccer. Her love of snowboarding took her Boulder, Colorado for college. While attending CU she joined the triathlon team and was introduced the crazy world of endurance sports. Eventually she left the road and began mountain biking and trail running. Post-graduate work/play took her to Telluride, CO and then Durango, CO.

After completing 2 ½ years at Fort Lewis College in an Athletic Training Program, she passed her certification exam (2006) and moved back to San Diego to pursue her M.S. degree. As a Certified Athletic Trainer, Sarah has worked in injury prevention, rehabilitation, and sports performance with athletes of all levels including collegiate, high school, weekend warriors, and professionals. In 2007, she began her master's degree at SDSU studying exercise physiology and nutritional sciences.

Sarah is a strong proponent of functional fitness; life doesn't happen in a straight line, so why would it make sense to work out in one. Bridging the fields of sports medicine, exercise physiology, and nutrition is a perfect way to help individuals attain their goals of becoming more healthy and fit. She is excited about joining the Gut Check Fitness Family; there is a whole lot of fun and hard work to be had.

Megan Yu

Meg has been addicted to Gut Check Fitness for three years and is a believer in the outdoor-playground, functional-fitness, community-building philosophies that Joe Decker has built this company upon.

Born and raised on The Big Island of Hawai'i, she's naturally drawn to exploring the outdoors. In 2007, about a year after moving to San Diego, Meg found her love and passion for ultra-running (trail runs over the marathon distance). The 'gateway' distance of a 50k soon led to 50miles, which then climaxed in a 100miler. This was accomplished with the 'gut check' mentality of "what you put in, is what you get out."

As a mother of four, Meg understands the need for taking good care of our body/mind/spirit and prioritizing life to reach the necessary balance. Her daily life is focused on faith, children/youth, education, service, ultra-running, and maintaining health.

Paula Khelifi

Paula moved to US at age 10 from Lisbon, Portugal but born in Angola, Africa. In high school she started cheerleading and her school was good enough to compete in Orlando, FL. Joined the World Gym in Somerville, MA at age 16 and was hooked. Not only was she working out with weights and running miles on machines, but had the privilege to rub elbows with a couple other gym regulars, Hulk Hogan and Randy Macho Man Savage.

Out of High School she took a job working for Boston Interior Designers but didn't like being in an office. So she started teaching children's classes at Deborah Mason of Dance, voted #1 dance school in Boston by Nickelodeon, in return for free Jazz and Russian Ballet lessons. Then a friend dared her to audition for the New England Patriots cheerleaders and she made it. For 3 seasons she cheered the Pats on for the hot pre games and very cold end of year games. Tired of freezing her butt off she went to NYC to audition for the Knicks and made that. With only the clothes on her back and $50 moved to NYC to dance for the Knicks for 6 years, co-captain last 2 seasons. Kept dancing for recording artists and MTV shows but finally got burnt out and decided to take a break.

Had her beautiful daughter, Lina, which made her realize life is too short not to follow your dreams. She then got her fitness certification and started teaching fitness classes around New York. After experiencing some personal issues, decided to throw caution to the wind and move to San Diego 6 months ago. She has been teaching in La jolla/ PB and has lately done some fitness DVD's such as Xtreme Cardio Dance now in stores. Recently decided she wanted to take her workout out of doors so she googled Boot Camps in San Diego and of course Gut Check Fitness popped up. Deciding it was meant to happen she contacted Joe and the rest is history in the making. She's now teaching an incredibly scenic, fun and challenging Boot Camp class at La Jolla Shores and loving it!
